Today the UNC Board of Governors takes up the topic of tuition hikes at its monthly meeting (See: article).  UNC President Thomas Ross has recommended in-state undergraduate tuition and fee increases of 8.8 percent. However leaders from other campuses such as UNC-Chapel Hill and N.C. State are pushing for higher tuition to allow campuses to make up for several years of state budget cuts.  UNC students have been organizing against the hikes and urging leaders to keep tuition and student debt levels as low as possible.

Meanwhile, the National Association College and University Business Officers recently released the results of their annual endowment study. The average rate of return on investments for 2011 was 19.2 percent, up from 11.9 percent in 2010. Harvard heads the list of colleges with the largest endowments at $31.7 billion. Coming in at number twenty-nine on the list of largest endowments, at $2.2 billion; UNC-Chapel Hill.
