Obamacare Regulation Requires Health Insurance Plans to Cover Contraceptives and Abortions

The Obama administration announced Friday a finalized Obamacare regulation  that requires all Americans, unless they work directly at a church, to purchase government-approved health insurance plans that cover sterilizations and contraceptives including those that cause abortions

According to the CNS News report, the regulation "further requires that health-insurance plans must provide sterilizations, contraceptives and abortifacients without any fees or co-pay." Such a regulation goes against many people's moral and religious principles.  The regulation will take effect August 1, 2012.

America's Roman Catholic bishops immediately condemned the administration's decision to move forward with the regulation as "literally unconscionable."  I guess the First Amendment, including freedom of religion, must be pushed aside in favor of a nationalized healthcare program that's truly good for everyone.  After all, paternalistic Obama knows what's best for you – don't try to second guess him.

Thank God for common sense. The way to prevent abortion and celebrate life is to assure women have children when they want them and when they can afford to have them…

I think you may be missing the point of this blog post. The Constitution and its amendments are supposed to protect the vast array of views and opinions that we as Americans enjoy. It is your right to choose a health plan that includes contraceptive coverage. However, under the First Amendment, it is equally another American's right to choose a plan that does not include contraceptive and abortion coverage if they are morally or religiously opposed to it. Unfortunately, Obamacare FORCES those who are morally or religiously opposed to these types of healthcare coverage to purchase them anyways.

Let's use the analogy of a vegetarian. Sure, the vast majority of Americans may purchase and consume meat because of its nutritional benefits. A vegetarian chooses not to eat meat for health, moral or religious decisions. What if the government came in and forced vegetarians to purchase and consume meat because it's "better for them" and "most Americans consume meat?" It's a vegetarian's right to choose not to purchase and eat meat just as much as it is another's right not to purchase an insurance plan that includes provisions to which they are morally opposed. They should have the option to purchase the plan that best suits their needs and values. It is not the government's place to force people to participate in a program or purchase a product that to which they are morally opposed. These decisions should be made by individuals, not the paternalistic government.
